GRAND RE-OPENING OF OPERA NIGHT IN NORTHPORT

Singers return to the acoustically charmed sanctuary at St. Paul’s on Main Street

Northport, NY…January, 2023…Opera is returns to Long Island after a two-year forced hiatus!  Opera Night Long Island (ONLI), a nonprofit providing the Island’s only live opera performances by accomplished singers, will resume its monthly program on Friday, January 13th at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 270 Main Street, Northport.  Doors open at 7 p.m., and the program will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Longtime Northport resident Isabella Eredita Johnson, Director and founder, announced a slate of ten artists, all veterans of the Opera Night stage, who will perform arias from popular operas, including Il Trovatore, Lakme, and Marriage of Figaro.   The program will also include performances of art songs and numbers from musical theater.

“We are so excited to showcase these talented singers in such an acoustically rich venue,” Ms. Eredita Johnson said. “They are all unpaid volunteers passionate about sharing their art.”  Admission to Opera Night is a suggested $10 donation at the door.  Advanced registration for the January 13th program is not required.  Off-street parking is available.

Listed in the National Registry of Historic Places, the sanctuary at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church dates to 1873.  Ms. Eredita Johnson said she chose it in 2006 for her growing program, in large part because of the vaulted ceiling that accounts for its acoustic excellence.  Opera Night continued its tradition of providing monthly musical performances by professionals and serious students until the pandemic put the program on ice in 2020.

Opera Night Long Island was founded in 2004 as an open mic in Northport’s Portofino Café.  The program’s popularity grew quickly, and Ms. Eredita Johnson established a screening process to upgrade the quality of performers, and she adopted the St. Paul’s sanctuary as its home two years later.  All of Opera Night’s activities are devoted to music, with a particular emphasis on operatic music.  ONLI’s stated mission is “to foster the production and appreciation of opera by providing affordable performances by the highest caliber singers and emerging young talent to local communities.”  More information is available at http://operanight.org.

Dramatic Return of Opera Night to Huntington Stage
Opera Night Long Island (ONLI) is returning to in-person performance after a two year hiatus. During that time we held several virtual events that delighted opera lovers here on Long Island and in the greater Tri-State area. Opera, however, is a delicacy best served in person, so ONLI is delighted to announce its return as a live event on a local stage.

In 2004 pianist and Executive Director, Isabella Johnson, began what was to become Opera Night Long Island as an open mic in a small coffee shop in Northport Village. The piano used for those performances could best be described as honky-tonk. There was a certain charm to the mix of informality and professionalism of these weekly events that drew in many new singers and attracted a growing audience. Opera Night moved to St Paul’s Methodist Church across the street and continued to grow. Performances were later given in various locations in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. As the audience grew, performances were formalized with invited singers and printed programs presenting beloved arias and art songs on a monthly basis. This continued until about two years ago when live performance became impractical.
Now ONLI has come full circle and will return to an open mic format. The evening of opera arias, art songs, and musical theater will feature many of the favorite singers who have been associated with ONLI over the years.
Our upcoming venue will be held at St. Paul’s Methodist, 270 Main Street, Northport, NY on Friday, June 3, 2022, at 7:30 PM.
